We sailed from Lepe beach(nr Southampton). With the wind light to start with I rigged 9.4 on my cat with my son using 8.5 on the Lightning our aim being to sail to the Isle of Wight. We covered the 2 and a half miles and landed at Gurnard just before the first squall hit !!!we sat in a shelter while the wind and rain passed and had a slow sail back.I then had a full planing run across on the cat before switching to 7.5 on the Xantos. With the tide just starting to turn the swell was huge in the middle of the solent!!!With the wind dropping a little I took the cat out with 8.5 and beat a mile or so up to the Beaulieu river mouth where I found a good stretch of flat water and turned and had a fast reach back as a another squall hit I found myself in the middle of the solent in a huge sea and tide just sitting there waiting for it to pass !!!!which it did after 10 mins and I made it back to Lepe.An interesting days sailing and I'm alive to tell the tell!!!
